Police in Lilongwe have unconditionally released the cannabis farmers who were earlier in the day rounded up before starting demonstrations allegedly against a breach of contract between them and United States Cannabis Association (USCA).

Secretary General of the farmers Stewart Neba tells Rainbow they were taken to Area 18 Police Station where upon arrival they met a principal secretary in the office of the president and cabinet who received their petition for delivery to the Minister of Agriculture Lobin Lowe.

He has however condemned their ill-treatment by the police as if they were criminals; saying they could have done better.

Meanwhile, USCA Chief Executive Officer Wezzie Ngalamila claims she doesn’t know the farmers in question; arguing the association is currently visiting farmers they are working with.

Police are yet to comment on the matter.
