Giving gifts is our culture – Kazako

Minister of Information Gospel Kazako lambasted BBC presenter who made insignificant remarks on over K15 million pledge by president Lazarus Chakwera to the Malawi national team players who are at Cameroon playing AFCON.

Yesterday, BBC sought comments from its Facebook followers on the monetary gift that Chakwera promised.

In their view, the president should have directed the money to other works such buying drugs, construction works and many more, instead of motivating the players.

In his remarks, Kazako suggested that it is Afrophobia to advance the view that Malawians should not give each other gifts because the country is poor.

“This story too me smells of some fragrance of imperialism because these things also happen in America and in Britain,” Kazako told the presenter.

He said that those questioning the gifts are saying that Malawi is poor and its people should not be giving each other gifts.

“We accept we are poor but we are not poor to the extent that we cannot give gifts. Giving gifts is part of our culture.

He added that Malawi Government feels it has done nothing wrong.

Yesterday, Malawi and Senegal played out 0-0 draw.

Senegal advanced to the round of 16 while Malawi will wait for remaining games to be played to decide their fate
