As pressure is still mounting on the British Broadcasting Cooperation (BBC) World Service to apologize to Malawians over their Tuesday Focus on Africa program, Malawi’s state broadcaster has weighed in.
Malawi Broadcasting Cooperation (MBC) Director General George Kasakula has announced that they will stop beaming BCC’s Focus on Africa until the UK broadcaster apologizes to Malawians for the alleged insult.
“As MBC, we have decided not to air or beam any content from BBC until they categorically apologize to the Malawi citizenry for the humiliation and insult,” wrote Kasakula on his official Facebook page.
It all started when the Malawi leader made a pledge to honor Flames Players with K1 million Kwacha each if they go through to the round of 16 at the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In the program, BBC insinuated that Malawi being a poor country should not waste money by giving gifts to her players for making it into AFCON’s round of 16, a development which angered Malawians.
Malawians started holding online protests against the world’s giant media house asking them to apologize for insulting their president, of which BBC is yet to apologize.
