MBC DG George Kasakula Disowns Facebook Page

Malawi Broadcasting Cooperation (MBC) Director General George Kasakula has distanced himself from a Facebook page bearing his name and pictures.

According to Kasakula, the page was created by ill minded people with an aim of advancing their own agenda.

Kasakula’s reaction came following social media reports that MBC will stop beaming British Broadcasting Cooperation (BBC) programs.

“It is completely fake news. It’s the work of ill-minded people who would want to use other people’s pictures in this case mine and say whatever they want on that account. MBC has not made that decision and it has not been discussed anywhere within MBC, let alone me George Kasakula as director-general of MBC, I haven’t said that anywhere. So, this is very unfair. Some well-meaning Malawians started believing such lies that’s why I have come openly to refute and distance myself from that fake account,’’ said Kasakula.

The MBC DG has also clarified that the Corporation is not in the business of making decisions based on social media reports. He said MBC as a public broadcaster will not be swayed or get embroidered in such exaggerated online reports and will continue conducting its business with professionalism.

He said: “Focus on Africa is a Programme followed by many people on MBC TV. The corporation will continue broadcasting the Programme as scheduled. MBC has a way of reforming its programming but it doesn’t do it through the director-general announcing the changes on social media particularly Facebook it doesn’t go that way. Our partnership with BBC is intact and will continue working professionally.”

Recently some Malawians have trolled the BBC online page expressing their displeasure and demanding an apology from the broadcaster on its Programme which sought views on whether it was right for Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera to motivate the country’s national team players with a financial reward if they proceed to the Round of 16 in the ongoing AFCON games in Cameroon.
