Opposition parties acknowledge change of power in Burkina Faso

Members of Burkina Faso’s opposition parties have acknowledged the change of power that took place on January 24 after the military ousted President Roch Marc Christian Kabore, according to a statement published on Thursday.

This comes after the first official declarations by the Patriotic Movement for Safeguarding and Restoration (MPSR), who have been running the country for the past three days.

According to the statement, member parties stated that the multi-sectoral crisis in the security, economic and social sectors of the country has been crippled since 2015 reaching an unprecedented level of seriousness in 2021.

Despite the multiple arrests of the former leader of the Political Opposition (CFOP), the regime of President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré has been unable to provide strong responses to the concerns of the Burkinabè people, the statement said.

They added that in the above context, defense and security forces intervened in the political aspect of Burkina Faso by putting an end to the regime that was in place.

In the statement, it said that for any Democrat and Republican, coups d’etat are in principle unacceptable.

Member parties said that they are however aware of their responsibilities especially at these particular times in the history of the West African nation, to recognize the change in power in the country as well as take note of the letter of resignation from President Kabore.
