Zambian woman died of breathing challenges in priest’s house

The Lusaka woman who was in April 2020 reported to have died in a priest’s house died of natural causes after suffering breathing challenges, a coroner has said.

Lusaka magistrate Judith Chiyayika, sitting as a coroner, passed a closed verdict stating that 42-year-old Monica Mulenga died of a sudden cardiac arrest.

Coroner Chiyaika has been hearing an inquest into the passing of Ms Mulenga who was reported to have died after having some tea at father Abel Mwelwa’s house in Lusaka.

But during hearing of an inquest last month, Lusaka magistrate Judith Chiyayika, sitting as a coroner, heard that Ms Mulenga died of experiencing sudden breathing challenges after having tea with Fr Mwelwa.

Adam Mcheleng’anga, a State pathologist who conducted an autopsy on Ms Mulenga told the court that he established that the woman died of sudden cardiac arrest.

The Toronto University trained forensic pathologist also said the autopsy revealed that Ms Mulenga’s uterous was inflamed due to fibroids.

She was also found with chronic nephritis, a bacterial infection in the kidney.

This morning, coroner Chiyaika entered a closed verdict indicating that the woman died of natural cause which implies that Fr Mwelwa is not culpable for prosecution in connection with the death.
