Operations Stall At Govt Offices In Blantyre Over Unpaid ESCOM Bills

Reports reaching feceofmalawi.com indicates that some government offices in the city of Blantyre have stopped their operations after Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) disconnected the power over unpaid bills.

According to ESCOM Publicist, Innocent Chitosi said the offices have bills amounting to 11 Million Kwacha covering a period from November last year to March this year.

The building houses offices for the department of immigration and citizenship services, Information, Legal Aid Bureau, as well climate change and metrological services among others.

  1. Very sad. However the Tonse Alliance government must intervine and assist the departments housed in that building. Some of us have followed this issue since 2011. They have one electrical meter and they share the bill. Some departments pay and others do not pay. The ones who are culprits are the Fiscal Police, NAO and other departments who process their payments at treasury. Now this year, these departments are struggling to access funds due to new IFMIS. This is where the problem is Bwana Gospel Kazako (Hon). Solution is to install prepaid meters for each floor because each department occupies a floor. Those who dont pay will suffer alone. Facilitate this. We understand the departments have been trying to get this done but bureacracy at capitol hill is suffocating the efforts. My other question is that, we also understand that that building hosts alot of govt critical communication and meteorogical infrastructure. What are altenatives if you take off power from them??
