MUST student Saidi Kuyesi spotted selling tomatoes to generate tuition fees

Many students both in Secondary Schools and colleges in the country are dropping out of school each passing day due to exorbitant fees as guardians find it hard to raise funds.

But the story is different for Saidi Kuyesi, a second year student who studying Biomedical Engineering at Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) in Thyolo.

Kuyesi uses the holiday to sale vegetables at Chinkhoma Trading Centre in Kasungu with an aim of raising funds to top up his tuition fees from his parents.

Seasoned writer Thom Khanje spotted the student at Chinkhoma Trading Centre.

“Was enjoying chips chapachiwaya at Chinkhoma in Kasungu yesterday when I noticed this young man busy on a laptop while selling a variety of vegetables. On engaging him out of curiosity, he told me he is a 2nd year biomedical engineering student at Malawi University of Science and Technology and is currently on holiday.

“He runs the vegetable business to supplement what his farming parents can afford in terms of fees and upkeep as they struggle to meet all the needs. He uses the laptop, which he bought for himself, to keep himself engaged on school prescribed literature and, of course, some entertainment even while on holiday. His name is Saidi Kuyesi,” wrote Khanje.

The photo of Kuyesi has since gone viral on social media.
