Mutharika speaks against Bingu’s mausoleum takeover

Former President Peter Mutharika has trashed a directive by President Lazarus Chakwera given to the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Wildlife to ensure that the resting place of former President Bingu wa Mutharika is in good shape.

In a statement signed Mutharika’s spokesperson Shadreck Namalomba has described the directive as misguiding.

This is in sharp contrast spokesperson of the Mutharika family who recently welcomed the directive, saying the family was struggling to take care of the mausoleum.

According to Namalomba, Government through the Ministry of Culture has since 2015 been in negotiations with the Bineth Trust to take care of Mpumulo wa Bata.

He said the negotiations stalled due to lack of agreement on certain aspects.
