Chinese national arrested for shooting man found picking stones at a mine in Zambia

Police in Lundazi are holding a 37 year old Chinese national for allegedly shooting a Zambian who was found picking stones at a Chinese Mine in Lumezi District.

Police deputy public relations officer Danny Mwale identified the suspect as Wu Zhigang of Makeni area in Lusaka who is being held for the offence of attempted murder.

“Mr Zhigang is alleged to have shot Edward Manda aged 46 of Zumwanda area in Lumezi District who was among other people found picking some aqua stones at Jin Wan Mine. The mine is said to belong to the Chinese nationals. The victim was shot on the left thigh causing him to sustain a fractured leg. He is currently admitted to Chipata General Hospital where he is receiving treatment,” Mr Mwale stated.

He stated that the incident occurred yesterday at round 13:30 hours at Jin Wan Mine located in Zumwanda area of Lumezi District.

Mr Mwale stated police officers who rushed to the scene recovered a pistol believed to have been used in the act with one round of ammunition.

He also stated that a 44 year old man identified as Simon Banda of Nchute area in Chongwe District was found dead in his house where he was sleeping with his wife and three others.

Mr Mwale stated that police officers who visited the scene found the deceased lying in a pool of blood with a deep cut on the left side of the mouth.

He stated initial investigations revealed that the deceased had a quarrel with his wife after coming back from a drinking spree.

“The incident is suspected to have occurred between July 2, 2022 around 21:00 hours and July 3, 2022 around 01:00 hours in Nchute area of Chongwe District. The body of the deceased has been deposited in UTH Mortuary awaiting postmortem,” Mr Mwale stated.

He stated that the deceased wife identified as Alice Chipaya aged 44 together with three of her relatives are detained in Police Custody.
