Prisons Department Warns Of Fraudsters Demanding Money From Prospective Recruits

The department of Malawi Prisons Service has warned the general public and unsuspected prospective recruits against fraudsters who are calling people that they have been considered for recruitment in the department.

In a statement seen by this publication signed by Prisons’ national public relations officer Superintendent Chimwemwe Mike Shaba said they have noted with concern that there are some tricksters who are demanding money from the unsuspecting Malawians pertaining to the Prison Warder Recruitment interviews that the Department conducted in the month of June this year.

According to Shaba, the unscrupulous people are sending text messages or making phone calls informing people that they have been successfully shortlisted to undergo a basic Prison Recruit training at its training school in Mapanga, Blantyre.

“The truth of the matter is that the shortlisting process is still underway and that it is receiving due attention. When the shortlisting is finalized, the Prisons department will communicate to the Malawians using several media platforms including Radio Stations, News Papers, Prisons’ Website and Prisons’ Official Facebook Page,” said Shaba.

He then urged Malawians to report such people to relevant authorities.

“We, therefore, urge everyone to be vigilant against these fraudsters and report them to police. We also warn that those that will be caught in the cobweb of such fraudulent activities will be brought to book to answer criminal charges,” he said.

Earlier this year the Prison Department released a vacancy calling for qualified Malawians to join the departments as prison warders, shortlist of names of candidates for the training is yet to be released.
