Veteran musician Lucius Banda who is also Presidential Advisor on Youth and Arts has expressed shock over the death of human rights icon Emmie Chanika.
Chanika died this morning at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Lilongwe where she was receiving treatment.
Writing on his official facebook page Banda expressed shock over Chanika’s death.
“Rest in peace Mama Emmie chanika, I learned alot of activism from you, remembering those years around 1996…. as we worked with Amnesty international and penal reform. We visited almost all prisoners together along side Fr Gamba. Go well Hero, go well mama you fought a good fight,” wrote Banda.
According to a family member, Tonny Kachikondo, remains of Chanika are expected to be taken to Blantyre where vigil is taking place at her residence in Namiwawa.
Founder of the Civil Liberties Committee, Chanika was also a trained registered nurse and she began working in 1992 as human rights groups started to form and agitate for political change in Malawi.
