Man stabs to death his two-month old baby in Zambia

A 21year-old man of Mikomfwa Township in Luanshya district is on the run after he allegedly stabbed to death his two month old baby in cold blood.

The baby was stabbed in the abdomen using a sharp object and sustained a deep cut and was rushed to Roan General Hospital where she later died.

Copperbelt Police Commanding officer Sharon Zulu confirmed the incident which happened on Tuesday 4th October ,2022 around 11:30 Hours and identified the suspect as Leonard Bwalya.

“Facts are that on the material date, around 11:00 hours, Bwalya went to visit the mother of his baby to have his clothes washed, the Mother to the infant Bridget Mwamba, 22, also of Mikomfwa Township went to draw water, hundred meters away from the house and left the baby sleeping on the chair in the custody of the father who was visiting,” she said.

Ms Zulu said about 10 minutes later, the mother of the infant went inside the house in the company of the suspect and lifted the baby to breastfeed her.

“It was then that the suspect informed her that he had noticed a wound on the baby, and when she inspected the baby, she discovered a deep cut on the abdomen. The mother to the infant immediately alerted her neighbors who in turn took the baby to Roan general hospital while the suspect fled,” she said.

Ms Zulu disclosed that the baby unfortunately died in hospital the next day around 11:46 hours and the body of the infant was deposited to the mortuary awaiting postmortem and burial.

Ms Zulu also said that police have instituted investigations into the matter, and that the suspect Lenard Bwalya is by broadcast time still on the run.
