THE Body of 23-year-old Lemekani Nyirenda, a student who was studying nuclear engineering in Russia will be repatriated to Zambia, Lusaka on Sunday December 11th.
Lemekani died in September at the battle front of the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia.
Lemekani is believed to have been found guilty in April, 2020 of contravening the Russian Laws and was given a sentence of 9 years to serve.
He was then permitted through the Russian amnesty to be pardoned on grounds that he participate in the war in which he was killed on the Ukrainian side.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Corporation Stanley Kakubo said that Russian authorities had been summoned to give details of the demise of Lemekani.
“We were told that on August 23rd, he was conditionally pardoned and was allowed to participate in a special military operation for such he was killed in September. We then demanded that officials details are given not his recruitment, A DNA test be done on the body to ascertain identity, details of repatriation, details on compensation for the family,” he said.
He said that on December 5th, this year a report was given and it has been communicated that the remains are expected here in Lusaka on December 11th, DNA was conducted and samples have been received for cross match and gratuity owed to him will be handed to his family.
Mr Kakubo further assured that the Ministry will ensure that such a happening does not happen to any other student and that there is no other Zambian student in the Russian Prison.
