President Lazarus Chakwera has fired Dr. Steve Kayuni as the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) with immediate effect.
Chakwera said this during his nation address on commission of inquiry’s report regarding the arrest of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Director General Martha Chizuma.
According to Chakwera after learning that the police acted upon Kayuni’s complaint to arrest Chizuma, he summoned him to hear his side of the story.
Chakwera said that Kayuni made it clear that he felt injured by Chizuma’s judgements in the leaked audio, but the president faulted him for using his office for personal interest.
Chakwera added that he decided to remove Kayuni from his position for using government resources to settle his personal issues in the Martha Chizuma arrest.
Chakwera has since replaced Kayuni with Masauko Edwin Chamkakala as the new DPP.
Until his appointment, Chamkakala was the Director of the Legal Aid Bureau.
