The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) says it will appeal the decision by Principal Resident Magistrate Viva Nyimba, who handed a suspended sentence to former NFRA deputy Chief Executive Officer Gerald Viola and businessperson Chrispin Chingola.
In a statement signed by ACB’s Principal Public Relations Officer Egrita Ndala, the Bureau has expressed intention to appeal the suspended sentence which was handed yesterday.
Nyimba handed Viola and Chingola a three year imprisonment sentence which he suspended for two years.
Viola and Chingola were convicted last week on Monday on misuse of office and influencing a public officer to misuse his office respectively.
Viola and Chingola were arrested by the ACB in October 2020 for unilaterally issuing to Missies Trading a Local Purchasing Order (LPO) number 6750 to supply 10 000 metric tonnes of maize to NFRA worth K3.3 billion for the business interest of Chingola of the said Missies Trading Company.
