HRDC AND MULUNGUZI SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS GIVE 7 DAYS ULTIMATUM TO ZOMBA CITY COUNCIL TO RECTIFY THEIR PROBLEMS

Human Rights Defenders Coalition(HRDC) Eastern Region chapter in collaboration with students from  Mulunguzi Secondary School have given Zomba City Council seven days to fix sewer system and deal with land intrusion at the school.

HRDC and Mulunguzi Secondary School students were supposed to stage demonstrations on Friday 10 March but it was suspended and they decided to resolve the matter by giving Zomba City authorities 7-day ultimatum.

Chairperson for HRDC Eastern chapter Madalitso Banda has explained reasons for suspending demonstrations to the next seven days because they agreed with Zomba Police, DC and City Council in a meeting on Thursday, that the City Council should correct all the problems that arose.

Banda also added that the ultimatum has various grievances but main issues are land encroachment and sewerage system that is not working at the school de therefore demanding the city council to rectify those problems within seven days if failed they protest in streets

However, Chief Town Planning Officer for Zomba City Council Phillimon Maseko has responded to the ultimatum saying that the council have already directed the contractor working on the disputed land not to proceed with construction works.

Meanwhile, Board of Governors at Mulunguzi Secondary School Pastor Evance Chidzanja narrates that they have been engaging Zomba City Council on the same, but their efforts returned nothing.
