Corruption is crippling Escom works

Government has warned Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) members of staff against corruption which is affecting the work of the company.

The sentiment has been made by  Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola , when he presided over a donation of K50 million by the Escom to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDma) to support survivors of Cyclone Freddy that has caused devastation in southern part of the country.

Matola has said that When there is a problem or disruption, it is not everyone that come to mourn with you but many do take advantage, So what is happening in the energy sector is that for those who understand the system and know that there is no power on a particular line, they take it as an advantage to vandalize.

However, Matola also added that there have reports of those who are work for Escom, especially in faults department, demand a certain token for customers just to go and attend to faults.

“So when that fault is not attended to, that’s when people vandalize the infrastructure,” said Matola.

Meanwhile, Dodma director Moses Chimphepo has commended Escom for what he called a timely gesture.
