Over 200 people displaced by floods in Rumphi

Over 200 people from Chihanga and Chibo villages in the area of Traditional Authority Mwalweni in Rumphi District have been displaced from their homes by floods which have also resulted in destruction of crops and household property.

According to Councillor for Chiweta- Chitimba Ward which has been hit by the flooding, Gilbert Chirambo, some of the affected people have sought shelter at Chitimba Primary School.

A list compiled by Chibo Village Development Committee indicates that about 110 people and a report from Chihanga Village indicate that almost 79 people have been affected respectively.

Director of Administration for Rumphi District Council, Mathews Mkandawire says the council is still assessing the damage through the district’s Disaster Desk Office.
