EU challenges Malawians to use access to information law in promoting democracy

The European Union(EU) has challenged Malawians to make use of the access to information law in promoting democracy.

The sentiments have been made following observations from the Malawi Human Rights Commission that Malawians are not demanding information from public institutions a situation that affects the promotion of transparency and accountability.

Rune Skinnebach Ambassador of the European Union to Malawi said the Access to Information Act is not only for the media, adding that the citizens have to make use of the law.

Skinnebach added that democracy is accountability, transparency as well as raising the voices.

Meanwhile Chancy Kalolokesya, Deputy Director for Civil and political rights at the Malawi Human Rights Commission has disclosed the commission needs about half billion kwacha to fully implement the Act.
