Man arrested for impersonating ESCOM official

Police at Kanengo in Lilongwe have arrested 47-year-old Austine Mulotho for allegedly impersonating an ESCOM employee.

According to Kanengo Police Station spokesperson, Gresham Ngwira, the suspect was going around inspecting electricity connections to get those with illegal connection.

He said the suspect allegedly was demanding money from the houses which he found had illegally connection.

At one house, the suspect is alleged to have demanded K80,000 but the victim demanded that he should produce his identity card, which the suspect failed to, saying he had forgotten it at home.

The victims then reported the suspect to police, leading to his arrest.

Mulotho who hails from Blantyre, will appear in court soon to answer a charge of impersonation, which is contrary to section 99 of the Penal Code.
