Two CID Officers Arrested for Corruption, Accused of Accepting Bribes from Burundian Nationals

Two officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police have been apprehended on charges of corruption. It is alleged that the officers received bribes from foreign nationals in exchange for influencing the release of confiscated property.

According to Peter Kalaya, the national police spokesperson, the two officers accepted a substantial sum of 20 million kwacha from seven Burundian individuals. The bribes were allegedly given to secure the release of shipping containers used by the foreigners to store farm produce. The illicit transaction came to light during an investigation into the seizure of the containers.

The arrested officers, along with the seven Burundian nationals, have been charged with official corruption. They are set to appear in court on Monday, May 22nd, to face the charges brought against them.
