Government through the Ministry of Education has noted with regret that some schools are asking learners to go back to school for summer lessons barely days after schools closed on 21 July, 2023.
The Ministry has reminded all school owners and administrators in both public and private schools that this is against the Ministry’s policy and is very unacceptable for the following reasons:
Public Relations Officer the ministry Mphatso Nkuonera has said that the malpractice gives learners no room to rest after weeks of being in class.
“Learners need resting to refresh themselves in order to start with new energy the following term”, said Nkuonera.
Nkuonera continues saying that the malpractice also disadvantages learners from vulnerable families whose parents or guardians cannot afford to pay for the summer lessons. This promotes disparities and inequalities amongst learners.
The vice gives room for some teachers to deliberately fail to complete the planned work within the school calendar with the aim of running summer lessons.
The Ministry will, therefore warned all school owners not condone such malpractice and schools going against the policy risk disciplinary actions by the Ministry.
Meanwhile the academic calendar for 2023/2024 , will commence on 11 september 20223.
