The First Grade Magistrate’s Court in Liwonde has convicted and sentenced a 20 year-old man to 11 years imprisonment for having sex with a child.
Police prosecutor Jafali Matupi identified the convict as Ali Yassin and told the court that Yassin defiled the girl on the night of August 18, 2023 when she went to a nearby village to attend an initiation ceremony.
He also stole a mobile phone, a pair of flip flops and an underwear, all valued at K45,000, according to details submitted in court.
Yassin pleaded not guilty to the charges levelled against him before the State paraded six witnesses whose testimony helped in securing a conviction.
First Grade Magistrate Lawrence Mangani slapped the convict with 11 years imprisonment for having sex with a child and one year imprisonment for theft.
The sentences are running concurrently.
Alli Yassin hails from Chimala Village, Traditional Authority Sitola in Machinga District.
