MBS impounds 102 bags of re-packed fertilizer

The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) has impounded 102 bags of (Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potash) NPK fertilizer belonging to Rafik Agro-dealers in Mzuzu for allegedly illegally repackaging and selling them on the market.

MBS Northern region manager, Kissinger Chiunjira, said they found the said fertilizer following a tip-off on Wednesday, October 4, 2023.

“As MBS, we received a tip-off from well-wishers on October 4, 2023 that a businessman, Mr. Blessings Nyirenda, the owner of the said agro-dealer who was selling NPK fertilizer mixed with foreign materials such as soil.

“When we visited the place, we indeed found Mr. Nyirenda with his workers mixing original fertilizer with foreign matter and repackaging it in original 50kg sacks belonging to Smallholder Fertilizer Revolving fund (SFFRFM) for reselling.

He said they demanded immediate closure of the shop and reported the matter to Mzuzu Police who have arrested Mr. Nyirenda.

“Meanwhile, we have also sealed Rafik Agro-dealers and the matter has been reported to Mzuzu Police who have immediately apprehended him and legal proceedings will commence as per requirement,” he said.

Meanwhile MBS has also impounded all fertilizer consignment belonging to Rafik Agro-dealers for further investigations.
