Mutharika’s step son case adjourned to November 28

The High Court in Mzuzu has adjourned to November 28 a case involving Tadikira Mabfudza, a step to son to former President Peter Mutharika.

Mabfudza and seven others are answering a manslaughter and human trafficking charges in a case connected to discovery of a mass grave in Mtangatanga Forest.

However, the court will convene tomorrow for hearing of bail application for Aubrey Dukes and Arnold Mwakiyelo, who were arrested last month.

In the past two days, the state has paraded a number of witnesses to the case and one of them being Professor George Liomba.

This is how Professor Liomba testified in the case;

Q: Prof. what could have caused the suffocation?

A: It was Carbon Monoxide.

Q:Do you know where this might have come from, like the source of the carbon monoxide?

A: I was not there when they were inhaling it.

Liomba said during their investigations, they took samples to Central Veterinary Laboratory in Lilongwe to confirm if it was Carbon Monoxide.

He told the court that they could not confirm because they needed flesh blood, which they did not have.

Asked then how they concluded that it was suffocation emanating from Carbon Monoxide, Liomba said some body tissues showed cherry colour, which is a typical sign of carbon monoxide.

Q: Do you agree with me that there are other diseases or factors that can cause tissues to turn into that colour, for example, cancer?

A: My Lady, I do not want to turn this court into a pathology lecture, cherry colour change is caused by carbon monoxide.

The case is being heard before by High Court Judge Gladys Gondwe
