Police in Phalombe have arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly being found in possession of K240, 000 fake currency.
Spokesperson for Phalombe , Jimmy Kapanja, has identified the suspect as Maxwell James who was arrested after he deposited K155,000 with a mobile money agent at Mulomba Trading Centre.
According to Kapanja, on 9th December 2023, the suspect visited a certain Airtel and TNM Mpamba Kiosk at Mulomba TC and the transaction was successfully done, later on he produced suspicious bank notes which the agent discovered were counterfeit.
The matter was reported to Mulomba Police Unit, who rushed to the scene and arrested the culprit.
When searched, he was found with fake bank notes in MWK 5, 000 denominations amounting to K 240, 000.00 bearing serial numbers CC 00600079,GA 06009109, AC 06088120, and GG 0670998.
Seizure of the fake bank notes was made pending for verification by the Reserve Bank of Malawi.
The suspect will soon appear before court of law to answer charges applied to him.
