Man Nabbed For Selling Fake Fertilizer In Lilongwe

Police at Lingadzi have arrested 65-year-old Cassim Kamwana for allegedly being found in possession of counterfeit fertilizer which led to seizure of 11 bags.
Kamwana was arrested on December 23, 2023, in Mtandile Township in Lilongwe.
Lingadzi Police said the matter was reported by one of the duped customers who went to Mtandire Market to buy NPK Fertilizer for application at his maize field in Mchinji.
Police say the suspect was selling the fake fertilizer at K70,000 per bag. The complainant bought four bags of the fake NPK Fertilizer at the total price of K280,000.
“The following morning, during application at his farm in Mchinji, the complainant realised it was not fertilizer but dry soil particles. He returned to Mtandire where examination of other purported bags of fertilizer at the suspect’s shop revealed that all bags were loaded with dried soil particles and not the real fertilizer,” said Salomy Zgambo, Publicist for Lingadzi Police Station.
Lingazi Police is advising people to avoid buying fertilizer from unknown sources and to be cautious on price.
The station is also urging people to report to police anyone whom they suspect to be selling counterfeit fertilizer. Kamwana hails from Chithumba Village, Traditional Authority Liwonde in Machinga District.
