Fomo earns first-ever TNM Super League promotion

Friends Of Mulanje Orphans (FOMO) have been promoted to the TNM Super league after defeating Ntopwa FC 4-3 on post-match penalties at Kamuzu Stadium on Sunday to win the 2023 Southern Region Football Association (SRFA) ThumbsUp Premier Division League.

The two teams played out a 1-all draw in regulation time, as Chimwemwe Kamowa scored for FOMO after four minutes into the match but Ntopwa equalized on 14th minute from Japhet Kanzimbi free kick.

In the shootout, FOMO managed to convert four penalties, while Ntopwa managed to score three penalties only as Innocent Milanzie and Amidu Medson missed their penalties.

The win means that FOMO have completed the list of teams to play in the TNM Super League after joining Baka City and Kawinga Fc as the rookies in the Malawi’s elite league.

Speaking after the victory, Fomo head coach, Mapopa Msukwa, said he was very happy to achieve his dream of guiding the team to the super league.

“I am very happy for the win; it was a good and a tight game and this season the league was very competitive as the teams were well organized but I must applaud my players for the fighting spirit that they showed this season,” Said Msukwa.

Meanwhile, Technical Director and Coach for Ntopwa, Isaac Jomo Osman, said it was a tough match but they lost it by not scoring in the 90 minutes as his players missed a lot of chances.

“It was a tough game, a painful result, we have lost but I think we missed a lot of chances. We had clear chances which we did not utilize them so if you miss chances you are punish, I just wish FOMO all the best as they go into the Super League.” Said Osman.

The Mulanje based side pocketed K5 million for being champions while the Ama ghetto kids received K2 million after finishing as runners-up.
