Trouble brewing in Tambala wakuda camp: MCP members protest NEC resolutions

Information reaching this publication indicates that some Malawi Congress Party (MCP) members are planning to drag the party over resolutions made at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held recently.

Recently MCP held its NEC meeting at the party’s headquarters in the capital Lilongwe where a solution was made barring those who have served the party for less than two years from contesting at elective conference slated for August this year.

One of the concerned members Eddie Banda confirmed of the development with one of the local daily papers in the country.

Banda said she has since penned MCP Secretary General Eisenhower Mkaka on the matter.

“While Article 35 (2) of the MCP constitution empowers the national executive committee to establish rules and regulations for conducting elections, there remains ambiguity regarding the extent of these powers.

“A careful examination of this provision suggests that the NEC’s authority under this article is confined to operational election matters, rather than the formulation of eligibility criteria,” Banda was quoted in the letter by Nation Publications Limited.

Effort to talk to Mkaka proved futile.
