Three people arrested for having a hand in the murder of South Korean woman

Malawi Police Service (MPS) has arrested three suspects in connection to the murder of Woonja Hwang, a South Korean woman.

National Police Spokesperson Peter Kalaya said Hwang was “gruesomely killed and robbed of a cellphone along a footpath near Lilongwe River.”

The incident took place on February 7, 2024.

The three arrested are: Yusuf Matola 33, Gift Banda 29 and Regan Phiri 39 – all residents of Lilongwe’s Area 36 and Chinsapo attacked Hwang when she was on her way to Lilongwe Golf Club for tennis lessons.

“MPS has gathered strong evidence that connects the three suspects to the case. All the three suspects were arrested within Lilongwe City.”

Yusuf Matola comes from Mila Village, T/A Ndindi, Salima while Gift Banda is from Machebe Village, T/A Mulumbe, Zomba and Regan Phiri is from Kumwembe Village, T/A Kumtaja, Blantyre.
