MUM DEMANDS SERVICE PROVIDERS TO RESPECT ARTISTS BY PAYING THEM BETTER

Musician Union of Malawi has demanded the service providers to respects the Malawian Artist by giving them better packages for the services they offer.

The development has come after the Music Union of Malawi took advantage of Labour day on Wednesday during the labour day celebration at Njamba freedom park to call upon the event organizers and other service providers to respect the artists in the country.

The music body president Vita Chirwa said the artists play a big role in entertainment industry and that it is important to give them better packages whenever they engaged for performances.

“We would like to appreciate the support that other service providers offer to our Musicians in the country and we would like also to appeal for those who don’t pay our musicians well after their performances they engaged to, to start showing love and care to our musicians because they are source of our joy” he said

Chirwa further said if the musicians negotiate their costs on their own, there is no need to give them what they have not negotiates for.

“Whenever the artist are given the better packages, you motivates and encourage them to work hard on their music” he said

Meanwhile, the music body has encouraged the musician in the country to be part of the union for them to push their affairs with one voice

“We want to act as a link between the service providers and our musicians on the issues of payments and contracts when the field is not improve. Therefore we going forward as MUM to help our artist on the issues that affects them by organizing the workshops involving the experts” he said.

MUM also indicates that they are taking a new course in terms of uplifting the Music industry and creative sector as a whole with the move of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Bingu School of Culture and Heritage at Malawi University of Science and Technology. The aim is to constitutes the frame work for cooperation and further acknowledging their shared interest in promoting the countries culture through music,

The deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Wilson Mandala commended MUM for the works it was doing in the country to promote the music industry.

To spice up the event at Njamba Freedom Park, there was performances from other artistic disciplines such as traditional dance from Chichiri prisoners.
