ZIMBABWE -During a dramatic divorce hearing, Muleya Mumba, a resident of Chingola, shocked spectators with his heartfelt plea to his ex-wife, Maureen. Muleya had sponsored Maureen through college, believing her degree would lead to their marriage.

“I did the most Zambian gentlemanly thing possible,” he stated, tearfully lamenting, “I took you to college, paid your fees, and even bought you textbooks and rice! How can you now refuse to marry me?”

Maureen, embodying the confidence of a recent graduate, replied, “You took me to college and paid all expenses, but that doesn’t mean I will marry you,” eliciting gasps and laughter from the courtroom. The judge struggled to maintain composure amid the unexpected drama, while witnesses dubbed Muleya “The Crying Sponsor.”

Maureen emphasized that her education was for her own future, declaring, “I got the degree; I didn’t sign a love contract.” Back at the tavern, Muleya’s friends reacted with humor, suggesting he should have made her sign a “Sponsor Agreement,” and even started a local GoFundMe to help him regain his pride.

In response to the situation, Muleya has decided to enroll in evening classes, hoping to turn his education into a personal advantage.
