Alliance for Democracy (Aford) President Enoch Chihana has expressed concerns over President Lazarus Chakwera’s recent visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), linking it to the ongoing fuel crisis in Malawi. Chihana claims that while Chakwera had stated that fuel is available in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the government lacks sufficient foreign currency to purchase it.
Reacting to President Chakwera’s national address delivered on Wednesday this week, Chihana highlighted that the fuel shortage persists due to the government’s inability to secure adequate foreign exchange. However, he commended Chakwera for traveling to the UAE, suggesting that the President has the privilege of engaging in such diplomatic trips.
Meanwhile, Apostle Eldton Mukarangeya, leader of the Glory of God in Jesus Church, criticized Chakwera’s address, accusing some cabinet ministers of misleading the President about the fuel crisis. Mukarangeya also expressed disappointment that Chakwera failed to provide concrete solutions to the ongoing problem.
In his Wednesday address, President Chakwera stated that the government is in discussions with the UAE to address the fuel shortage. He further revealed that a delegation from the UAE is expected to visit Malawi next month to continue negotiations aimed at establishing a direct fuel procurement agreement between the two nations.
