The Mchinji Magistrate’s Court has sentenced 39-year-old Kondwani Chirwa to three years in prison for vandalizing the Ruweredzi Bridge located in Traditional Authority Mkanda’s area in Mchinji District.

Presenting the case, state prosecutor Yotamu Chaonaine told the court that reports of people vandalizing the bridge’s metal components had been brought to the attention of the police by concerned community members.

According to Chaonaine, the incident occurred on December 21, 2024, when suspects stole six pieces of metal and bolts worth K240,000, which they intended to sell at the market. Chirwa, who hails from Sunama Village in the same area, admitted to the crime but pleaded for leniency, stating that it was his first offense.

Despite his plea, the court handed him a three-year custodial sentence, emphasizing the need to deter others from vandalizing public infrastructure, which disrupts essential services and endangers the community.
