Gas Cylinder Explosion Injures Woman and Her Niece in Zambia

A 40-year-old woman and her 18-year-old niece from Chifubu Township in Copperbelt Province in Zambia are recovering from burn injuries after a gas cylinder explosion ignited a fire in their home.
The incident occurred on 22nd January 2025 and was reported to police by the victim’s niece, who identified her aunt as Gertrude Matanda.
In a statement, Copperbelt Province Commissioner of Police, Peacewell Mweemba, confirmed the incident and detailed the injuries sustained. Matanda suffered burns on her legs, hands, and forehead, while her niece sustained burns on her knees and hands.
According to Commissioner Mweemba, the two were cooking outside when they heard an explosion from the kitchen. Neighbors intervened and managed to extinguish the fire before it could spread to other rooms.
The victims were rushed to Ndola Teaching Hospital, where they are currently admitted in stable condition. Authorities are continuing investigations into the cause of the explosion.
