In a significant development aimed at addressing the ongoing fuel scarcity, over 200 fuel tankers have arrived in Malawi within the past 24 hours. The tankers, which were loaded at the port of Tanga in Tanzania, are part of a consignment procured by the Malawi government to stabilize fuel supplies across the country.
Raymond Likambale, the spokesperson for the National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA), confirmed the development to the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC). Likambale highlighted that the government has also acquired additional fuel trucks from neighboring countries to expedite the delivery process.
“These measures are expected to significantly ease the fuel scarcity being experienced in some gas stations. We are optimistic that with continuous loading and deliveries, the supply chain will stabilize in the coming days,” said Likambale.
The recent scarcity has caused long queues at fuel stations, disrupting daily activities and creating challenges for businesses and individuals alike. The government’s efforts to resolve the crisis by leveraging regional partnerships and ensuring timely procurement have been welcomed by many.
As the trucks continue to offload their cargo at designated depots across Malawi, authorities have urged citizens to remain patient and assured them that steps are being taken to restore normal fuel supply nationwide.
The Ministry of Energy has also reiterated its commitment to enhancing fuel supply logistics and addressing any systemic issues to prevent future shortages.
