A 30-year-old man, Emmanuel Chipewa, from Limbuli in Mulanje District, is recovering from serious head injuries sustained during an incident of political violence on Sunday.

Known as Nyaada, Chipewa is a supporter of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and aligns with the incumbent Member of Parliament for Limbuli constituency, Daud Chida.

He claims to have been attacked by supporters of aspiring DPP candidate Godfrey Graciano M’bawa.

The violence occurred during a whistle-stop tour led by Joseph Mwanamveka, the DPP Vice President for the Southern Region. Limbuli was the final stop on the tour.

Chipewa, who was rendered unconscious during the attack, was rushed to Mitawa Private Clinic for treatment, where he was later discharged as an outpatient. He has since reported the incident to the police.

However, police have yet to comment on the matter. In contrast, M’bawa denies the allegations, stating that it was Chipewa who incited violence by tearing his flag and attacking one of M’bawa’s supporters, which led to the altercation.

According to M’bawa, Chipewa was then beaten by his supporters, but they did not hack him as he claims.
