Opposition leader Dr. George Chaponda has raised concerns over the government’s proposed move to reintroduce a law that would set an age limit for presidential candidates in Malawi.
In a statement issued, Chaponda revealed that senior officials from the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) are pushing for the reintroduction of this law when Parliament reconvenes. He noted that during a recent meeting with members of the judiciary, it was made clear that the law would not be revisited.
Chaponda, however, argued that the government should shift its focus to addressing more pressing issues, such as food insecurity, which continues to affect a large portion of the population. He emphasized that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) remains the best hope for alleviating the country’s current challenges, rather than engaging in a political battle over the age limit law.
As the debate over the proposed law intensifies, questions remain about the government’s priorities amidst Malawi’s ongoing struggles with poverty and hunger.
