At least 17 individuals were arrested and handed over to the police last night for engaging in illegal forest activities on Zomba Mountain. The arrests were made with the assistance of Malawi Defense Force (MDF) soldiers, who have been deployed to protect the forest reserve.

Police Deputy Commissioner for the Eastern Region, Gladson Chipumphula, confirmed the arrests today during a tree planting event on Zomba Mountain organized by Sunbird Kuchiwa.

Chipumphula emphasized that this is just one example of the ongoing efforts to protect the mountain, noting that stakeholders are now working closely together to bring about positive change.

The crackdown on illegal activities is part of broader efforts to preserve Zomba Mountain’s environment, with authorities promising more actions in the coming days to combat deforestation and safeguard the region’s natural resources.
