A Zambia National Service (ZNS) officer is fighting for his life at Monze Mission Hospital after allegedly slicing his throat with a military knife in what police suspect to be a self-harm incident.

Southern Province Police Commanding Officer Auxensio Daka confirmed the case, identifying the officer as Captain Leroy Mumba, a ZNS officer stationed at Monze Milling Plant. His wife, Caroline Siteketa, a nurse at Monze Mission Hospital, discovered him unconscious and covered in blood upon returning home from her night shift on Tuesday at around 11:20 AM.

According to police reports, Capt. Mumba had dropped his wife off at work on February 17 before returning home with their three-year-old daughter. The next morning, Siteketa called her husband to check if he had taken their child to school, but he sounded sleepy. When she arrived home later, she found the gate unlocked and noticed blood stains on the kitchen floor.

After searching the house, she found the spare bedroom door locked and stained with blood. Unable to open it, she contacted her husband’s superiors at ZNS, who arrived shortly after. Upon gaining access to the room, they discovered Capt. Mumba lying unconscious on the bed in a pool of blood, with a bath towel wrapped around his severely wounded neck. A blood-stained military knife was also found nearby.

Police officers rushed to the scene, confirming multiple injuries, including a deep neck wound and small cuts on his hands. He was immediately transported to Monze Mission Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Authorities are continuing investigations to establish the circumstances leading to the incident.
