The ongoing financial literacy training sessions being carried out by one of the leading Insurance Companies in the country, Old Mutual Malawi Limited, has started bearing fruits among Malawians amid economic hardships.
This came to light on Monday at Blantyre Girls Primary School during the Annual General Meeting of the Southern Region Master of Ceremonies Association of Malawi (SORMACA).
Lydia Lulanga Mponda, one of the MCs from Ndirande, last year attended the training session at Malawi Sun Hotel and the training focused on how the MCs can manage their finances by emulating the secrets of the Big Five on money management. A lesson extracted from the behavioral characteristics of the big five animals in the jungle namely; Lion, Elephant, Leopard, Rhino and Baffalo.
During the training, Old Mutual Financial Education Manager Bernard Chiluzi shared with the MC’s a number of business ideas and some policies offered by the company and one of it being Mthunzi Funeral policy.
Mponda used the knowledge from the training to start up a Poultry farm.
“After the training session at Malawi Sun Hotel last year, I ventured into Poultry Farming where I started with 8 Chickens and now am having over 60 Chickens. Aside that, I other businesses supporting my MC business and am able to support my family.
“I have also joined more than two policies with Old Mutual,” said Mponda.

Concurring with Mponda’s remarks Maria Chilambura said: “After the training session in April last year, I shared the message regarding the Mthunzi funeral policy with my in-law who later joined the policy.
“In January this year her father died and Old Mutual through Mthunzi took care of the whole funeral program and my in-law came to thank me with MK70,000 for sharing with her the Mthunzi Funeral Service policy.”
Chiluzi hailed the two MCs for putting into practice what they learned from the previous session and he urged others to follow suit.
SORMACA President Patrick Kabvina hailed Old Mutual for continued support to the MCs.
