FIFA has selected three Malawian referees to officiate the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match between the Central African Republic and Mali.

According to FIFA’s communication, Malawi’s Godfrey Phillip Nkahkananga will serve as the center referee, with Pondamali Tembo and Clemence Kanduku as assistant referees. The match is scheduled to take place on March 24, 2025, in Casablanca, Morocco.

In a related appointment, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has chosen Martha Nyekanyeka as a referee assessor for the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup qualifier between DR Congo and Benin. The match will be held at the Complexe Omnisport’s Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa on March 16, 2025.

Reacting to the news, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Referees Manager Duncan Lengani said these appointments will serve as an inspiration to many referees.“The appointments not only boost the country’s football reputation but also provide valuable experience and exposure for our referees,” he said.

“This development can positively impact the overall quality of football in Malawi and inspire future generations of referees and players as we transform the game.”

These appointments highlight the growing recognition of Malawian referees on the international stage.
