Police in Karonga have arrested a 24-year-old man, Black Katema, for allegedly being found in possession of 220 litres of petrol without a license.
According to District Police Spokesperson, Constable Margret Msiska, Katema was apprehended within the township following a tip-off from concerned members of the public. The suspect was found with the petroleum liquid stored in multiple 20-litre jerrycans.
Katema, who hails from Shalison Village under Traditional Authority Kyungu in Karonga, is expected to appear in court soon to answer charges related to unlawful possession of petroleum products.
The illegal hoarding of fuel by vendors has been contributing to fuel scarcity and skyrocketing prices in the market.
