The Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court has ordered Harriet Banda and Jeremiah Mona to each pay K1.8 million for selling counterfeit Football Association of Malawi (FAM) merchandise.
Out of the total fine, K1 million will go directly to FAM as compensation. Banda was caught with 84 counterfeit Flames jerseys, while Mona was found selling 62 fake jerseys.
Police prosecutor Sub Inspector Kabazale urged the court to impose a strict penalty to deter similar offenses, arguing that counterfeit sales negatively impact FAM’s operations.
Magistrate Austin Banda initially considered a K5 million fine per person but reduced it to K1.8 million, citing that this was their first offense.
FAM’s commercial director, Tulipo Mwenelupembe, expressed satisfaction with the ruling and commended the police for their swift action.
