The M23 rebel group has announced that it will no longer engage in peace negotiations with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) government, citing increased security threats against its leaders.

According to a statement issued this week and signed by M23 spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka, the rebels claim that Congolese government forces continue to use heavy military weapons, including fighter jets, posing a threat to their delegates’ safety.

The group further alleged that these attacks have been particularly intense in the territories under their control, making peace talks unfruitful while Kinshasa continues its offensive operations.

Recently, the DRC government announced a bounty for anyone who captures Corneille Nangaa, the leader of the Congo River Alliance, who is also linked to the M23 rebel group.
