Tobacco trading has resumed at Limbe Market in Blantyre after it was temporarily halted due to farmers protesting low prices.
Some farmers, including Smart Kachingwe from Machinga, Amos Nahipa from Phalombe, and Jeoffy Kampango from Chiradzulu, said most of their tobacco is being bought between $1.20 and $1.30 per kilogram. They were hoping for a better price—at least $2.
Agriculture Minister Sam Kawale has officially opened the market. So far, the highest price recorded is $3.20 per kilogram, while the lowest is $1.15.
Despite trading resuming, many farmers appear unhappy and uncertain whether prices will improve as the day goes on.
It is expected that around 2,500 bales of tobacco will be sold today.
