The Lilongwe Magistrate Court has today failed to proceed with the tax-related case involving businessman and politician Alfred Gangata due to the absence of his lawyer, Bob Chimkango, who was arrested on Monday by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB).
Chimkango, who is based in Blantyre, is facing charges related to abuse of office during his time at the Malawi Housing Corporation. His arrest affected his availability in Gangata’s ongoing court case.
Zwelithini Chipembere, another lawyer representing Gangata, told the court that they had requested an adjournment to Wednesday, which the court accepted.
Gangata is accused of presenting a false document purportedly from the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) concerning his tax records—a charge he has denied.
