Police in the Southern Region have launched an intensive manhunt for suspected accomplices of the late Solomon Kamunda, a driver for the Chikwawa District Council, who died after being shot by law enforcers during an attempted escape.
According to Sub-Inspector Edward Kabango, spokesperson for the Southern Region Police, Kamunda died at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre while receiving treatment for gunshot wounds sustained to his leg.
The deceased, aged 48 and originally from Chikhambi Village, Traditional Authority Kasisi in Chikwawa District, was suspected of aiding criminals involved in a series of armed robberies and theft cases amounting to K123 million between October and December last year.
“Our investigations reveal that a government Land Cruiser belonging to the Chikwawa District Council was used in the crimes. Mr. Kamunda was the one driving the vehicle. Upon arrest, he led officers in an attempt to locate his accomplices, but he tried to flee during the operation, prompting police to open fire,” said Kabango.
Police say efforts to apprehend Kamunda’s accomplices are ongoing as the probe into the matter deepen
