The Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court in Mangochi has today sentenced popular Yao musician Bandera Wachiyao to three years imprisonment for unlawfully keeping a minor without parental consent.

The court found Bandera guilty of the offence after a series of adjournments since his arrest on January 3, 2025.

According to court records, Bandera did not face any charges of sexual assault as earlier speculated by some social media users. In his defense, the musician told the court that he only the child to feature as a vixen  in one of his upcoming music videos.

“Ankafuna Mwanayo Kuti Akhale Model Mu Nyimbo Yake Basiii,” Bandera was quoted during one of the court sessions.

Despite his explanation, the court ruled that taking custody of a minor without parental consent is a serious offence, and sentenced him to serve a three-year jail term.

The case has drawn widespread public attention, with many applauding the court’s decision as a warning to those who mishandle matters involving children.
